The Gore Range
The Gore Range is a rugged mountain range that dominates Vail’s eastern skyline as well as Silverthorne and north Summit County to its western skyline. Many of its mountains belong to Eagles Nest Wilderness and many are popular spots for hiking, climbing, back-country skiing and horseback riding. There are 36 named mountains within this range with Mount Powell being its highest point.
Named in honor of Lord St. George Gore, an Irish aristocrat known for hunting American West during three year expedition in mid-1800s (and allegedly killing thousands of buffalo, elk and bears for sport during this time), its current moniker is controversial and has led to calls for its change. Currently it honors this man by paying his name homage.
Though its name remains controversial, Colorado’s Gore Range mountain range has quickly become one of the state’s premier recreation spots. This range can be reached via two paved roads – U.S. Highway 24/285 which runs south from Interstate 70, and U.S. Highway 82 which connects Buena Vista with Gunnison and Crested Butte; two fourteener passes known in Colorado include Independence Pass and Cottonwood Pass; two national forests including San Isabel and White River offer dense aspen groves and blue spruces that thrive within their respective boundaries.

The wilderness area forms part of the National Wilderness Preservation System, established by an act of Congress in 1976 and mandated that areas within its boundaries remain free from permanent human imprint, providing unspoiled recreation which fits with natural environments.
